What the First American Pope Means for a Divided World

Robert Prevost, who will go by Pope Leo XIV, was elected as the first American-born pope in the papacy’s 2,000-year history.

Pope Leo XIV is a 69-year-old from Chicago and graduate of Villanova University.

He spent significant time doing missionary work in Peru, where he is also a citizen. According to today's guest, Mark K. Shriver, Pope Leo's perspective 'isn't conservative versus liberal' but reflects 'an expansive view, like Jesus did, of what our communities could look like.' The new pope has advocated for immigrants and marginalized communities, and his first papal message emphasized that 'God loves everyone unconditionally.’

On X, he’s challenged JD Vance and Trump’s policies on mass deportation and immigration, called for peace in Ukraine and even posted a lighthearted video about social distancing during lockdown. Critics claim he failed to act decisively in several instances of alleged abuse. He served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops starting in 2023.

I spoke with Mark K Shriver, President of Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, past president of Save the Children Action Network, and author of “Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis”. He shares the significance of selecting an American at this pivotal moment in history, insights into Pope Leo's past public statements, and the meaning behind his first words as the new pope.
