WATCH ALERT: I'm launching a new live interview show on Substack this Thursday, April 10. Join me at 5pm ET/2pm PT for my conversation with former CNN colleague Jim Acosta.
Today I’m glad to bring you this interview with Aziz Huq about the legal challenges confronting our courts and democracy. Huq is a University of Chicago Law professor with a specialty in constitutional law, criminal procedure, federal courts and legislation.
Professor Huq warns we're shifting toward what he calls a "dual state" - where a "lawless zone runs parallel" to our existing legal system. Our conversation examines the Trump administration's aggressive legal positions on immigrant deportations, visa revocations targeting foreign students, efforts to intimidate law firms, and questionable tariff authorities.
I asked him several questions posed by paid subscribers in this audience.
Huq brings both academic expertise and practical experience to these issues. He previously directed the Brennan Center's Liberty and National Security Project, litigated cases before the US Courts of Appeals and Supreme Court, and maintains an active pro bono practice. He's authored several books including "How to Save a Constitutional Democracy" and recently published a compelling analysis in The Atlantic examining threats to our legal system.
Don't miss this essential conversation about what's at stake for American democracy and what citizens can do in response.
The was recorded Friday April 4, 2025.
