In todays’ news: Vance took the mic at the White House, playing host on Charlie Kirk’s podcast; what he said might not shock you but it deserves attention. Investigators say they have a DNA match but no motive in the Kirk killing. And top Republicans want Charlie Kirk to get one of America’s highest honors. There’s other news: Trump targets another Venezuelan boat (again), the government is two weeks from a shutdown (yes, again), and TikTok is saved (yah, again). Plus a shocking new poll about parents and vaccines. We end with some News That Doesn’t Suck to keep your eye on.
Here are your headlines:
Breaking: Late today President Trump announced that the US has attacked a second boat traveling from Venezuela. The US military says the boat was in international waters and carried “three Venezuelan cartel members” who were all killed. In a post on Truth Social the President alleged that the boat was carrying “illegal narcotics (A DEADLY WEAPON POISONING AMERICANS!) headed to the U.S.” adding, “extremely violent drug trafficking cartels POSE A THREAT to U.S”. This is the second boat carrying Venezuelan nationals the US has targeted; there’s evidence the first was heading away from the US. Eleven people were killed in that strike. Twenty-five Democratic U.S. senators have since sent a letter demanding more information, noting that Congress has not authorized military action against Venezuela.
Also Breaking: Trump signed a presidential memorandum ordering the national guard to Memphis, Tennessee. Speaking from the Oval Office he said that Chicago is “probably next.”
Blame the Lunatic Liberals: Today Vice President JD Vance did a turn as host of Charlie Kirk’s podcast, with Stephen Miller as his special guest. Streaming live from the White House, Vance declared that “it is a statistical fact that most of the lunatics in American politics today are proud members of the far left.” To back this up, CNN reports that the VP’s office cited a YouGov poll that showed liberals are more likely than conservatives to “feel joy” over the death of a political opponent --- despite studies consistently showing far-right actors commit far more political violence than those on the far-left. Nonetheless, Miller vowed to use the resources of DHS and DOJ to “identify, disrupt, dismantle and destroy” a “vast domestic terror network” on the left. Declaring “left wing extremism” responsible for Kirk’s death, Vance said the administration plans to “go after the NGO network that foments, facilitates and engages in violence.” NGO refers to a non-governmental organization, like a non-profit. The VP singled out The Nation magazine, the Ford Foundation and progressive donor George Soros, as targets for investigation – while providing no link to violence or Kirk's death. On X an editor at the Nation said, “The VP is not telling the truth here,” explaining the magazine is funded by subscriptions and donations.
Cancel Culture on the Right: In his podcast appearance Vance also seemed to encourage the mass doxing campaign against individuals critical of Kirk. “When you see someone celebrating Charlie’s murder, call them out, and, hell, call their employer,” said Vance. Several university employees, healthcare workers, and even a US secret service agent have been placed on leave or fired for expressing criticism of Kirk or for statements seen as mocking him after his death. Unidentified organizers set up a website where Kirk fans can “report” anyone who makes comments deemed objectionable. The website, originally called “Expose Charlie’s Murderers,” now called the Charlie Kirk Data Foundation, has already targeted people who say they never posted anything in celebration of Kirk’s death — and yet their names, addresses, photos, and employers were posted online.
The Investigation: Today FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News that investigators have matched DNA on a towel wrapped around a rifle to Tyler Robinson, the suspect in custody for Kirk’s killing. Patel said investigators also found a screwdriver on the roof of a campus building which had Robinson’s DNA. According to Patel, the suspect wrote a message before the shooting, which he destroyed. It’s worth noting that Patel made these announcements on cable television rather than through an official press release. The Washington Post tonight reports that Robinson admitted to the shooting posting in a group chat on Discord “It was me,” adding, “I’m sorry for all this.” They say he also told his friends he’d turned himself into the sheriff’s department. According to the Post, Discord is cooperating with authorities. Robinson will appear in Utah court tomorrow, September 16, to be formally charged.
